Originally from Southern California, Michael Hedges, father of two girls, has been making furniture and cabinetry since 2004. He began in his small shared Brooklyn apartment, building in his time off and irritating roommates with plane shavings and sawdust. After moving to Portland, OR and then Olympia, WA, Michael was hired at the shops of Altura Furniture and Beech Tree Woodworks, respectively. Michael graduated from The Evergreen State College in 2013 after working for 2 years with Madeline Morgan (Bay Area bespoke furniture maker of 40 years).
Michael has been single-mindedly working to blend timeless standards and modern techniques in his hand-made furniture and cabinets. Straddling the line of modernity and tradition, he works to design and create pieces relevant to the world today, taking into account the limited nature of his materials and changing needs of people, while referencing timeless designs and time-tested construction. He strives to build and co-design with his clients beautiful, functional, and enduring objects from honest materials. Michael believes that working together with a client creates a lasting relationship not only between them, but with the object they design. He believes that great work walks a path, though it be circuitous at times, between modernity and tradition. This path provides for both the client and creator a place to wed all the wonderful and constantly changing possibilities of our world now, with the timeless and exacting standards that have brought us to appreciate craft in our own lives.
