About Michael Hedges

I started building furniture in my small apartment in New York City with a few hand tools handed down to me from my grandfather and great grandfather. I had little idea what I was doing then and no idea that I would be where I am today, living in Olympia, WA raising 2 beautiful girls and designing and building hand made furniture and cabinets…

I began this work in New York, NY, on my own, moved to Portland, OR and worked with Jeff Behnke and Roland Zehetbauer at Altura Furniture, and finally moved to Olympia in 2008 and worked with Nicolas James at Beech Tree Woodworks. All this time I was coming to the realization that I wanted to do this on my own, get my own ideas down on paper and then built.

After 4 great years at Beech Tree Woodworks I began studying with Daryl Morgan, furniture maker of 40 years and faculty at The Evergreen State College. I studied with Daryl for 2 years questioning the necessity of craft, the usability and esthetics of furniture, history of craft, and hefty doses of critique.
